//T-Shirt Dress - H&M//Skirt - Topshop//Leggings - H&M//Shoes - M&S//Necklace - Accessorize//
I find that during the colder months even when it isn't raining I turn to darker colours, in other words I wear black or nearly block everyday. So while the majority of this outfit is black, I chose to break it up with my velvet skirt, not only to add a touch of colour but to add texture and layers. I would normally wear a skirt that covers the end of the dress but today I hitched it up a notch on my waist to show off the stripes at the bottom as well.
This week has been quite relaxed for me, mainly because most of my university work at the moment is reading, which is something I could do everyday anyway. That and I know that the week coming up is going to be very hectic as I will be balancing blogging, university and attending Oxford Fashion Week. I am not attending all of the shows but it is still quite the commitment.

No stranger would it be.
//Coat - Jack Wills//T-shirt - Zara// Dress worn as skirt - H&M//Tights - Primark//Shoes - Converse//
As
November draws to a close that layers have begun to increase slowly
along with the number of pairs of tights I am washing per week.
Fortunately this morning I had a bit more time on my hands to wear
something other than my usual jeans and a tee combo like the majority of
students (I couldn't go without my daily Converse though). This outfit has the advantage that not only am I warm due to the abundance of layers, but you still look put together thanks to the lace. I chose to spin a more grungy look today but I might experiment with a more vampy look when I wear this dress out at night.

//Jacket - Topshop//Jumper - Primark//Skirt - ASOS//Tights - TU//Boots - M&S//
I never thought I would be one for long skirts and the Chelsea boot but
alas the moment has come that I am dressing to match the presence of the
city I live in. Living in Oxford but not going to one of the colleges
is weird because you can still act like a tourist when you roam the
cobbled back streets surrounding Oxford University. (I study at Oxford
Brookes just so you know). This deep green skirt reminds me of the ivy
that used to grow around my garden back in Devon as well as that I
definitely feel impeccably well dressed every time I wear it making it
one of this winters staples for me! Alongside the usual culprits my moto
jacket and suede Chelsea boots.

// Jumper - H&M//Skort - Zara//Socks - ASOS//Boots - Timberland//
I dread the colder months and as winter begins to draw in I am taking every opportunity to keep wearing my summer staples, like this white skort. I was tempted to wear it with black and grey but resisted and went for an almost all white ensemble, breaking it up with the navy stripes on this cosy knit jumper. I chose to wear these cream knee high socks so they matched the tone of the jumper so the look wasn't too harsh. Too keep with the muted tones I slipped (read yanked) on these amazing Timberland boots that are going to rapidly become an autumn winter staple this year.
As luck would have it I found a spot in the park near my campus where there was an equal amount of fallen leaves to the evergreen ivy where I could catch up on some reading before my English tutorial, especially considering this is the last of the autumn sun.

I am a *dare I say it* Feminist. Sort of.
I personally don't really like the words feminist and feminism, yes once during the suffragette movement and Thacher's time in power they were relevant but now? Maybe just saying you believe in gender equality would suffice?
I guess I have always been a "feminist" from asking why I couldn't be a fire fighter in the playground or why during secondary school as a girl I was meant to be more organised, multi-task and keep out of trouble. I first found out that this was feminism through Tumblr, the social network of equality and free speech... What I didn't know was that my views on feminism and opinion of gender roles in society would be integral to my classmates opinion of me during college. If asked yes I am a feminist but really I believe in the equality of all genders be that economically (earning the same wage for doing the same job), the right to vote and the social expectations pressed upon both genders from a young age.
So what is feminism to me as of right now? It is working to show both genders that they can be whatever they want to be, that yes men can suffer from anorexia as well as girls, and yes women can be good at maths. It is calling out people who seek to remain in the current patriarchal society for their own benefit. It is ensuring that every child across the world has access to free primary and secondary education as far as it is practical for them as individuals. It is working towards a better future that allows people of any gender to be able to stand up and give a political opinion in the House of Commons (or equivalent) without the fear of being laughed at. It was finding out in a geography lesson that is you allow women to be educated as well as men then the children of the future will be able to live healthier lives. It is human rights.
Yes I hate the word feminism as it is associated with man-hating but no I don't think it is a redundant idea, gender equality is still an issue across the world.

//Dress - Zara//Watch - Unknown//Socks - Topshop//Brogues - Clarkes//
Sometimes simple outfits are the best outfits, cue a dress and some shoes. I am officially living in Oxford now already to start lectures next week at Oxford Brookes but for now I am experiencing freshers week. Which is all kinds of fun and crazy not to mention the nights out... During the day I have been enrolling for my course buying little bits I forgot to buy last weekend when I arrived to comfort is key, this dress fits the bill perfectly. It also makes me feel like an off duty model at New York Fashion Week... Just me okay.

//1970's German Army Shirt - Twisted Magpie(Vintage)//Trousers - Monsoon//Shoes - M&S//
I discovered this khaki green 1970's German Army shirt when I was in Whitby a few days ago at the vintage fair I mentioned
here. I couldn't wait to style it, so I kept it simple with some charcoal skinny trousers and some black Chelsea boots. I think this shirt is going to be one of my autumn staples this year as it can be layered with so many other items and all of my other favourite autumnal colours. And of course I accessorised with a strong red lip and an adorable Springer Spaniel.
I had a lot of fun shooting this outfit with my sister, we did it en-route back home after walking our dog. That is one thing I am going to miss is long walks in the country with my dog where you are unlikely to see another person for miles (6 mile power walks are my favourite). The light kept changing so my camera reacted in a way I didn't expect creating shadows where there weren't any, and making some of the images really grainy like the old film photos I used to get developed as a child.

//Dress - Monki//Necklaces - Accessorize//Shoes - Toms//
This is a simple outfit I wore to visit my grandparents the other weekend. I have never sported a midi length skirt or dress so this was the first time and as with every other first I have experienced this summer it was a great one. I was shocked to find that this cut of dress and the length suits me with my tall and relatively petite figure. To me this look just ooozes festival vibes I just wish I had a festival to wear it to! Also grey has worked its way into my summer wardrobe... I do love my many shades of grey...

//Hat - Topshop//Dress - Mango//Belt - New Look//
I was flicking through my photos from my blog the other day and stumbled upon these outfit shots which happen to be from my eighteenth birthday. I forgot about them in the midst of my travels and well LIFE. I picked up this dress while in Portugal back in May, and well isn't it just the perfect summer day dress that can be easily transitioned in to autumn. I cannot wait to style this china doll style print with some more basic items to create a more layer effect. But for now I am happy wandering around in nothing but the dress and a hat, because hey it is summer and for once the UK has been blessed with sunlight!
I am glad I left this post until now, because since turning 18 years of age I have learned a lot about myself, partly because my parents have allowed me more freedom and because I have chosen to go out and do things that I may not have done before my travels. Oddly enough I was not one of those people who on the day of their 18th birthday went clubbing, in fact I still haven't entered a proper night club (I am yet to discover that "joy"). To make up for that fact I took to traveling and trying to move on from toxic relationships.
I may have mentioned this before but I use my birthday as a sort of New Years. I make resolutions that I want to do in the next year of my life, besides the usual get healthier and read more books. On my list this year:
- Move on from friendships and other relationships that are toxic for me, even if that may affect the other persons happiness.
- Stick to writing in my journal, keep being passionate about it.
- Work on those sewing projects... Yep the 100 I have stored up ready to be started.
- Trust my instincts and try my hardest not to take the opinions of people I don't know very well to heart.
- SMILE everyday even if it is only at a silly cat video on YouTube.
Eighteen seems an awfully large number to someone who doesn't feel at all ready to venture into adult life, but I believe that a number does not define your age your mindset does. If you think you can do something and ignore the expectations of others for your age group then there is no reason why you shouldn't do that very thing!
XO, Miriam
P.S. This is the first post in a while I have written with no proof reading and without the aid of my journal or a list of ideas... so sorry for grammatical errors and general waffling! Also this song:
I turned 18 last month.
